Artist Bio

Nico (they/she) is a queer Filipinx light designer, production manager, creative technologist, and multidisciplinary light artist that uses audiovisual equipment, interactive technologies, and digital fabrication tools for live performances, light sculptures, and installations.

They are the production manager at Center for Performance Research and lighting designer for the live production of Oscar shortlisted documentary 32 Sounds. They completed their postdoctoral artist residency at NYU Tisch’s Interactive Telecommunications Program, where they earned their Masters of Professional Studies.

Their audio-reactive light installations have been featured in the Illumination Light Art Festival, Other Art Fair, and at several music venues including Knockdown Center, Elsewhere, and National Sawdust.

ARTIST STATEMENT

As a non-binary queer person of color, Nico’s continuation to explore light as an art medium in a white-male dominated space is an act of resistance and a manifestation of QPOC indulgence, joy, and pleasure. Light is radiating, warm, mesmerizing, and they believe at its very essence, light can be void of controversy, classism, and racism.

Music and nightlife has always been Nico’s source of inspiration, consumed by light and sound, sharing space with the rest of the community, with the belief that specific nightlife spaces allow for escapism, release, and liberation regardless of the identities one may hold.

They want to reimagine the art world, and create a non-hierarchical community of dominantly QPOC creatives, where they can share ideas, work collaboratively and respectfully, resigning individual authorship and dismantling systems of power.
